• Low areas: Also called sag or belly. This is when debris collects in the low point, which can cause a backup or blockage.
• Offset pipes: Usually due to a change in the environment (e.g., root growth or earth settling), sometimes two pipes that meet will shift independently of each other and no longer line up properly.
• Tree roots: Believe it or not, but tree roots can crush or move a pipe so that it’s offset. This is common when trees have been planted without consideration for the location of the sewer line or sewer lines were installed before the surrounding vegetation had time to mature.
• Grease build-up: Garbage disposals make this problem more likely. Because it isn’t water soluble, grease builds up in the line and sticks to the sides of the pipes. If it isn’t cleared out, the grease will eventually cause a blockage, especially when other materials get caught in it.
• Cracks: Clay and cast-iron lines are prone to cracks when put under pressure. Not all cracks are created equally. If water flows, no action is needed. Depending on the location of the crack, you should consider adding a liner which will help reduce leakage.
